The Design Exploration Lab is part of the Mechanical Design Collective. This lab space is shared with other professors and groups including Compliant Mechanisms and BIO MEMS, led by Dr. Spencer Magleby, Dr. Larry Howell, and Dr. Brian Jensen.

When you join the lab, you must do a few things:

1) Talk to the MDC secretary, currently Brooklyn Peters. Her desk is in the Northeast corner near the window. She will have you sign a form and assign a desk to you. Talk to her about getting ID card access to the lab and the garage. Generally graduate students get their own desk and undergraduates share. Or you can email at cmr-secretary@byu.edu

2) Fill out this form to have the current website liaison, Fisk Lundgreen, create a website bio for you.

3) Get on box.byu.edu for the lab. Talk to any current lab member and with your Net ID they can add you.

4) Ask questions and voice what your expectations are. Figure out the why behind the work you’re doing. Sometimes when people focus on research for a long time, they forget that new people don’t know what the purpose is.

5) Get to know others in the lab and what they do!

Useful resources available to lab members:

  • Computers. Some useful programs are:

    • Solidworks, ANSYS, MATLAB

  • 3D printers. On the computer to the right of the printer there is a tutorial that you must complete before using the printers. If you have any questions, ask around the lab, people are more than willing to help!

  • Fridge/Microwave. Make sure to label food you put in the fridge and don’t leave stuff there for long.

  • Conference Room. Available for reservations for meetings.

  • Garage space. There are scrap materials and tools that can be used for prototyping. Clean up after your projects and if they will be out for a long time, leave a note describing how long they will be there. Remember this space is shared with other labs.
